Yooo, if you’re trying to get monetized on YouTube, you need to pay attention to this right now.
YouTube just announced some major changes to the YouTube Partner Program coming February 1, 2027.
And the biggest one?
Getting paid is about to get harder.
Right now, creators can qualify for ad revenue with 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 valid public watch hours within 12 months, or 10 million valid public Shorts views within 90 days.
Starting February 1, 2027, YouTube says new creators will need 8,000 qualified watch hours within 365 days or 20 MILLION qualified Shorts views within 90 days.
So yeah.
They’re basically doubling it.
If you’re already sitting at 2,000 or 3,000 watch hours, or you’re anywhere close to that 4,000 right now?
I’d be trying to get that shit done before February.
Because YouTube says creators already accepted into YPP won’t have to meet the new entry requirements.
Think about that.
You can try to get your 4,000 now, or potentially have to go chase 8,000 later.
Shorts are changing too.
Starting February 1, creators will need 10 million qualified Shorts views within the previous 90 days to receive Shorts ad and subscription revenue sharing.
If you fall below that number, you can still stay in YPP and make money from long-form videos, but YouTube says your Shorts revenue sharing will pause until you cross 10 million again.
10 million views every 90 days is a serious number.
But everything YouTube announced isn’t bad.
They’re also working on new ways for creators to make money through YouTube Shopping, brand deals and incentives for creators who start or help grow trends.
YouTube Premium Lite is expanding too, with creators getting a share from a dedicated revenue pool based on watch time and views.
YouTube actually says it expects to pay creators more money overall in 2027 than it did in 2026.
So what does all of this really mean?
YouTube isn’t getting rid of creator monetization.
They’re raising the bar.
And if you’re already working toward getting monetized right now, I wouldn’t be bullshitting.
Get the subscribers.
Get the watch hours.
Get your application in.
Because 4,000 watch hours sounds a whole lot better than 8,000.
Platforms change.
Algorithms change.
Requirements change.
You gotta pay attention because the people who know the rules changed before everybody else are the ones who get a chance to move first.
