Yooo, Namecheap is finally back online.
But after being down for around 15 HOURS yesterday, I’m looking at hosting a little different.
ONE DATA CENTER CAUSED ALL THIS?
A cooling failure at the Phoenix data center affected more than 5,000 servers.
Websites went down.
Hosting went down.
Email went down.
VPS services were affected.
Even Namecheap’s own website and support systems had problems.
Hardware fails. Storms happen. I get that.
But if ONE data center has a problem and this much goes offline...
Where was the backup plan?
ARE WE GETTING RAILED FOR TAKING THE CHEAP ROUTE?
That’s really what I’m asking.
Namecheap is affordable and easy to use. That’s why a lot of us use it.
But cheap isn’t really cheap when your business can disappear for hours.
I’ve already seen people talking about moving domains and DNS to Cloudflare or taking their hosting somewhere else.
I’m not jumping ship just because everybody else is.
But I’m definitely paying attention now.
NAMECHEAP IS BACK. NOW WE NEED ANSWERS.
Namecheap CEO Hillan Klein apologized and has been publicly updating customers throughout the outage.
Now that services are back, the bigger thing I want to see is the post-mortem.
We know the cooling failed.
I wanna know why there wasn’t enough redundancy to stop one data center problem from causing all this.
Namecheap is back.
The trust?
That’s gonna take a little longer.
