VERIFIED badges for FREE now.
And nah, I'm not talking about paying every month for Meta Verified. ?
Facebook officially introduced
Facebook Verified, a new verification badge designed to confirm there's an actual real person behind a profile.
THIS IS DIFFERENT FROM META VERIFIED
This is probably where people are gonna get confused.
Meta Verified is the paid subscription service that comes with a blue verification badge and additional benefits.
Facebook Verified is different.
There's NO subscription fee.
The purpose of this badge isn't necessarily to say somebody is famous, notable or endorsed by Facebook.
It's basically Facebook saying:
“We verified there's a real person behind this profile.”
HOW DOES FACEBOOK VERIFY YOU?
According to Meta, Facebook Verified primarily uses a selfie-based verification process.
Eligible users record a short video selfie, which Facebook compares against existing profile photos to confirm that the person matches the account.
Facebook says the process is free and typically takes only a few minutes.
Some people will be automatically verified based on your activity on facebook!
Facebook's verification information also says some users may be asked to take a selfie or upload an ID during the verification process.
WHO CAN GET IT?
Facebook says you have to be at least 18 years old and your account must be in good standing with its Community Standards.
The account also can't show evidence of inauthentic behavior.
And there's another important detail:
Facebook Verified currently isn't available for Pages
Meta says the feature is rolling out in phases, beginning in select markets with plans to expand globally.
WHERE WILL THE BADGE SHOW?
Once you're verified, Facebook says the badge can appear across your Profile, Marketplace, Dating and Groups.
Meta also plans to eventually show these verification badges on Feed posts.
You verify once and the badge travels with you across those areas of Facebook.
BUT A VERIFIED BADGE DOESN'T MEAN FACEBOOK TRUSTS EVERYTHING YOU DO
Facebook specifically says the badge does NOT mean Facebook endorses somebody or guarantees that they're trustworthy.
It means Facebook verified that there's a real person behind that profile and that the account met its verification requirements.
That's an important difference.
WHY IS FACEBOOK DOING THIS NOW?
AI is making it easier than ever to generate fake content, profiles and messages.
So while AI keeps getting better at creating fake people online, Facebook is creating another way to identify the humans. ?
And the rollout is actively reaching users now. Facebook profiles receiving the badge can display when they were verified, along with information explaining that verification is based on account activity and may involve identity confirmation.
Think about where Facebook is putting this badge too.
Marketplace.
Dating.
Groups.
Those are places where knowing there's actually a real person behind an account could matter.
The internet is entering an era where simply seeing a profile picture and a name isn't always enough anymore.
Facebook apparently wants the gray check to become another signal that there's actually a human on the other side of that screen.
